Candles for Scholastic Trip

by KH
(London KY)

Our scholastic group won a regional meet and was invited to participate in the national competition. Unfortunately, we have a small public school that places more emphasis on sports than scholastics so fundraising was the only option for all of the kids to be able to go and have their transportation and lodging paid for without having to come up with the money themselves.

Of course we had all done the bake sales, car washes, catalog sales, etc., and wanted something different that could generate some real money. A local dealer provided us with homemade candles at a fraction of the price she sold them in her store and allowed us to sell the product directly to customers and keep any proceeds above the cost to her. It worked out great. Because the kids were high schoolers and the area is pretty small, we were able to do door to door sales and also set up a booth at the local vendors mall.

We raised more than $1,000.00 in just under 2 weeks and all the kids were able to attend the competition. Unfortunately, we didn't win but we did place in the top 5 and were all proud at how hard we had worked.
