Car Wash Fundraiser Gets Lucky
by Carl Jones
I am a teacher at a small school on the East coast, and although there are many rumors of all the money that goes there, we didn't see much of it. As a result we had to do alot of our own fundraising.
On this occasion we were working for funding a new playground. We were kind of new at this and we had very little experience with raising money; we did a car wash. There were few cars and we only raised a hundred dollars or so. The gas station people also slowly became unhappy we were using their supplies.
Throughout this we had some funny experiences, like one of the students started washing the wrong car and the owner came back and gave him $2 for randomly washing it. Also a teacher came by to try and help, he was trying to find a place to park and accidentally ran over some sponges.
As we kept trying to raise funds we held a bake sale in front of the school. And let me tell you, some of those "baked goods" were horrible.
One day a kind gentleman came by and asked what we were doing, the students told him (I'm a teacher) and he then meandered around for a little bit. He then decided to donate $200 or so because he said that he used to do bake sales and come to this school. We were able to build the playground because of his generosity.
Total we were able to raise around $2000 after a month or so of fundraising.
