Caramel Goodness Fund Raiser

by Khris Berry

Several years ago, more years than I car to admit to, I was a fifth grader at Burleson Elementary School in Hartselle Alabama raising money for my trip to Washington DC.

Our teacher set up a money raising campaign that relied on students and parents selling candy bars. Each bar was one dollar, and we had many flavors.

I was soon at the top of my class, because of my business scheme. I rode the bus to and from school everyday. Since I was the only fifth grader on my route I had the perfect market. The bus ride was usually an hour each way, so I would always pick up an extra box of candy before I left. Since it was a school event, the candy was allowed on the bus. I would sell almost an entire box every day, because everyone wanted something to eat on the ride home.

The boxes were all easy to carry with a cardboard handle on them so that I could easily keep it in my hand for others to see. They practically sold themselves.

My parents would both take a box to work and their coworkers loved to just grab the candy bars whenever they wanted and leave the cash behind. Each bar was only a dollar so there was never any need to make change or carry coins around with me.

These candy bars won me a free trip to Washington because of their ease to sell and wonderful flavor.
