Cookbook Fundraiser For The Elderly In Our Community

by Angela
(Houston, TX)

When my daughter was in the 3rd grade, for Grandparents Day we were asked as parents to provide a original recipe from any grandparent in our family. These recipes were combined in a book arranged by their catagory, (appetizer, dessert, soup, snack, dinners...), with a photo of the child or grandparent (or both) and their names.

The child was also asked to write a short story on why grandparents are so important to them, this story was printed, in their own writing, next to their recipe and photo.

Each child received one finished book for their grandparent, (or parent if their grandparent was deceased). The children then took orders for the cookbooks, and we sold them at our local fair.

When the cookbooks were distributed and the money was collected, the class then went to our local assisted living community and donated the money to them. The children learned how good it felt to help others and how important it is to respect and care for our elderly.

In total we sold roughly 5000 cookbooks at $5.00 each. After paying for the books production, the total donation was around $22,000! A amount no one was expecting, but was very excited about! We called this a complete success!!
