A granddaddy in the fundraising world, fundraiser popcorn has been around for a long time. Like any classic fundraiser, the continued success of the popcorn fundraiser is based on the popularity of the product - and popcorn is a favorite snack in a country that loves to nosh.
Popularity aside, another plus of popcorn fundraisers is the relative ease of handling the product. It's easy to store, is non-perishable and has a long shelf life.
It can be a little bit bulky though – popped popcorn sold in decorative tins can take up some serious space, but it's so lightweight almost anyone can handle moving a few packages around.
Popcorn fundraisers offer gourmet popcorn of all sorts. Popped popcorn dipped in caramel, cheese, chocolate or some other flavor and packed in a decorative tin is the original version of this fundraiser.
In recent years, though, microwavable popcorn has become a fundraising favorite for both the consumer and the event organizers.
There are plenty of fundraising companies offering fundraiser popcorn and they get pretty competitive in their pricing. There are a few who offer incentives like no up front cash or free delivery and these things definitely can have an impact on your bottom line.
When it's all said and done though, you can reasonably expect to make 50% - 60% profit from your sales.
Most fundraising companies package their popcorn in a generic container that says something like "Thank you for supporting our fundraiser."
There is one notable exception to consider though. The Boy Scouts of America have embraced popcorn fundraisers as an annual event and have contracted with companies to create their own brand of popcorn. Be aware of this when you decide of the timing of your fundraiser – you don't want to be in a head-to-head competition with the Boy Scouts.
