Mickey Mantle Baseball Cards

My father passed away when I was a little girl. When I was older, my mother gave me some of his old baseball cards. Two of them were Mickey Mantle baseball cards. I rarely thought much about them, except occasionally to show somebody who didn't believe I actually owned one.

A few years ago when I was working for a Denver apartment complex, one of the crew members' daughters became paralyzed in a car accident. She was 10 years old. What she wanted more than anything in the world was to go to Disney Land. So in an effort to raise enough money to send her and her family to Disney Land, we began fundraising.

We had a car wash, sold cupcakes and candy and pencils and treasure chest items. We called vendors and asked them to donate money. After two months of fundraising, we were still a couple hundred dollars shy of our goal. That is when I remembered my Mickey Mantle baseball cards. I thought my father would be proud for them to go to such a worthy cause. I listed my cards on an auction site for a quick auction, and explained the fundraising efforts we were doing. Within three days, the auction ended, and my Mickey Mantle baseball cards had made an extra $2000.

We were able to send the girl and her family to Disney Land, and had enough left over afterwards to buy her a computer. It was a great success!
