Photography Class Calendar Fundraiser

by Erin
(Cleveland, Ohio)

I am an art teacher at a school in Cleveland, Ohio and the school board decided that we should include photography as a course option in the school. Because we were limited on funding for equipment for this class, we decided that we would make a calendar for sale to raise the funds.

What we decided to do was have students who were interested in the photography class to take a photo of anything involving a nature scene through the seasons. Each student was allowed to submit four pictures, one for each season. After the submissions, the entire student body and faculty were allowed to vote on the photos that we liked the best.

The top three for each season were selected to be included in the Calendar. Once the Calendar was produced, we went to shopping malls and local events and set up a table to advertise the calendars and what we were selling them for. We were even able to speak with a local news show and have a representative go on their morning show to talk about the program and how citizens could purchase the calendar.

One hundred percent of the proceeds would be going to the photography class to purchase cameras, film, and the creation of a new dark room.

We were able to drum up enough publicity to sell enough calendars to pay for the items we wanted and the rest of the funds were donated to the PTA for help with the After-Prom program the parents put on each year.

That was a wonderful idea. I am also an Art teacher but I help Intellectual Special need adults express themselves through art and we have just implemented Photography and I would like to do something like that and if you have any more ideas I will love to hear about them.
