Pizzahut Reading Scratchcard Contest

I am the English teacher a bilingual French school, ages ranging from 2 1/2 - 5 years old. Majority of my students are beginning readers. Therefore I decided to host a Pizzahut scratchcard reading contest. Each student was given a Pizzahut scratchcard with ten little cute pizzas on it. Every Friday, I had reading celebrations at which each student was given the opportunity to read a book aloud and scratch one pizza off their card.Of course, some students were either absent or too shy to read in front of their peers, resulting in an extra pizza not being scratched. The students who had all ten pizzas scratched, received a Pizzahut coupon for a free personal pan pizza. Pizzahut was nice enough to provide the coupons. I loved this contest because over time, my students were very motivated to read. I even had students cry because they either had a doctor's appointment during reading celebrations or had to use the bathroom. Parents are amazed when they come to my class because of the eagerness to read. Even the students who can't quite read, would memorize the entire book verbatim or start singing the alphabet to be able to scratch their pizza. If you want to get two year olds interested in reading, this might be your secret weapon.
