Recycle For Words

(Portland, OR)

As a senior citizen I am very concerned about our service men and women who are protecting our freedoms. I am also concerned about their families.

Together, with three other friends, we decided to not only help the environment but our service personnel.

We visited several large retail outlets, WalMart, Target, Kohls,Home Depot, etc and obtained a donation of large boxes in addition to heavy duty garbage bags.

We then visited numerous apartment complexes, Senior Centers, RV Parks, and other high usage areas to ask permission to place the containers, with signage, on their property. We then agreed on "at least" a weekly collection. Most were receptive to the idea.

After the first two months we had recycled over $400.00 worth of cans and bottles. The money was used to purchase telephone calling cards for the service personnel.

The collection effort is still active.

Although we feel it is appreciated the real reward is to those of us who have a feeling of "helping".
