School Band Finds Key to Candy Fundraiser Success

by Shel
(Canton, OH, USA)

My daughter’s school sells candy as a fundraiser for the school band every year to fund their trip to out of town and state band competitions to offset the cost for parents. They always sell chocolate bars from our local world known chocolate factory so getting people to buy the candy isn’t the problem. Getting the children from the school to want to actually get out and sell the candy is the problem.

So we came up with an incentive. The child that sold the most candy would win an mp3 player donated by a local store. This got the children’s attention.

We had a more successful fundraiser that year than ever before. The children really got out and sold that candy! The parents didn’t have to pressure their children to get busy selling the candy. The children actually came up with their own selling strategies and ways to sell larger amounts of candy buy selling at local activities.

Since that year the school has had a different prize for the child that sells the most candy and now every candy fundraiser is a success. The success of recent fundraisers has really taken a lot of financial responsibility off of the parents since they’ve been so successful. The children just seemed to need an immediate goal to reach and they went for it!
