School Spirit Saves the Day

We sold the rubber bands to pay for a trip for disabled students to attend a conference. We had several types available- you could buy bracelets with the school's name on them, in the school colors, and you could have a message added on for an additional fee.
I would NOT have done the additional message thing. Even though we offered only about a dozen options, students wanted more. They were also hard to keep track of, and students changed their minds a lot.
In the future, I would probably order a set amount of the bracelets with the personalized messages and just sold them until they were gone.
We did make a good amount of money this way- they were inexpensive enough that everyone could buy them, and they were good gifts for teachers, parents, siblings, etc. to show school spirit. We raised more than enough money, and rolled the rest into a general scholarship fund, over $5,000.
The best thing to do is get the school on your side, and definitely order in bulk. Selling during lunchtime and at school sanctioned events, like sporting events or club meetings and PTA events was a great way to show school spirit and support a good cause!
