The Chocolate Fundraiser Surprise
( Thailand)
The chocolate fundraiser I was involved in took place when I was in my 2nd year in middle school; however, I remember it as if it was yesterday since it was something extraordinary.
Since we were only in middle school then when we were thinking of raising money, ideas that people came up became food related and were small variations from an ordinary bake sale.
One day a boy in our class found out that he knew of a giant sale of nestle and milo (local Thai brand) chocolate bars in tesco lotus. So we thought it would be really easy to buy a lot of it and sell it to children at school and other schools. This was a sure thing as we knew people were going to buy it. The money was going to be collected and given to a local school in Thailand that was just being set up and did not have much text books and facilities. However, after we talked to our school teacher our ideas quickly changed. The cause remained the same and the idea to use chocolate was still the same. Though we decided to create it into a big fondue and let people dip whatever they wanted to and eat it. However, it had to be able to stick on a stick we provided them and 3 sticks was worth 10 baht. So people could bring fruits and candies and simply dip it into the chocolate and enjoy it.
Although it was a great success as we were able to collect customers that would have had no interest if we just sold chocolate bars it was quite a mess and the fondue was sticky and extremely thick because we didn't add the right amount of water. In essence, it was a kids messy playground that was covered in chocolate.
Having said that, we all had a great time and we were able to get our whole school (New International School of Thailand) and other schools to participate actively and raise a total 12050 baht. It was not a lot, however, we like to believe we helped and made an effort.
