Unique Online Auction Fundraiser

The fundraiser I was involved in was quite a unique one. It was one where we auctioned old and used instruments and was formed by several students that live in Pittsburgh, PA.

Many of the students, including myself, are college students or graduates but it did not matter as we were offering our old instruments to people that were leading towards getting a cheap but good instrument.

The idea spurred when my friend Mike told me that he wanted to sell his old stand up Yamaha piano. The put pictures and contact information around the school but no one really had much interest in it. I told him that why doesn't he try it online through websites, such as craigslist? A few days latter he told me he got in touch with a friend and set up a website that was connected through craigslist. Therefore, when people offered for the piano in craigslist, they were redirected to a new website which included information about him and how to get the piano.

He initially put no price on the piano because he was more eager to get rid of it rather than make a profit. However, this changed when more than one person offered for it and became an auction base website. We then used this idea to sell our old instruments with local music students and also college students in Carnegie Mellon University and University of Pittsburgh and used the money we collected to help support aid reliefs.

One particular relief that we liked was the red cross and the the breast cancer research center in Pittsburgh.

The website is now not operational because we have no more instruments to sell. It was a small project during the summer before my first year in college but one that was rather successful in my mind and one that I would like to try again later on.

Auctions are a fantastic method for raising funds, particularly for larger organizations like schools. Internet charity auctions provide the ability to obtain bids from considerably more supporters when compared with old-style auctions.
